"Exposé" in Ubuntu Hardy

Easily switch between applications in Ubuntu Hardy

First you have to turn on Visual Effects:

  1. Gnome menu System / Preferences / Appearance
  2. Visual Effects tab
  3. Turn on Compiz by selecting "Normal" (or even "Extra").

There is an additional application that can be installed for you to configure Compiz:

  1. Open a terminal
  2. sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
  3. Gnome menu System, Preferences, Advanced Desktop Effects Settings
  4. Scroll down to Window Management

By default, the alt-tab combination is assigned to "Application Switcher", which is cool, shows the reduced windows linearly... but you may prefer to disable it and enable the Ring Switcher instead. I have done so and assigned alt-tab and shift-alt-tab to it. The advantage in my opinion is a clearer view of the applications while switching.

I also tweak the Ring Switcher so it becomes fast and displays larger thumbnails.

In addition, I enable the Compiz equivalent of Exposé: Scale / Window Picker. This one deserves to be accessible by keyboard and by screen corner. I also increment its speed.

If you use multiple desktops, note that Super-E activates Expo which allows you to choose one of the desktops and move apps among them.

Sadly, beyond these I think there is little that really would improve your productivity as opposed to being just eye candy.
